We figure out Mike's deal today when we remind ourselves that while Mike still loves Elly, his need to look like a cool dude means that he can't be the gushing gumdrop comic strip parents like Elly and the morons from Zits want him to be. This is lost on the Ellys of the world because boomers are imbeciles.

(Strip Number 1216, Original Publication Date, 28 October 1987)

Panel 1: We find Mike walking towards Elly as she cooks supper.

Panel 2: He then leans against her.

Panel 3: When she asks what he's doing, he says he's hugging her.

Panel 4: He then uses Farley's presence as an excuse when he says that if someone weren't watching, he'd use his arms.

Summary: As I said yesterday, Elly only thinks she had a calm, collected discussion about Mike's less lovely traits. Mike is trying to make things right because unlike her, he knows a "WHY DO YOU HATE ME?!" speech when he hears it.
