Having encountered the odd tradition of toasting the bride and not knowing in advance that Mike is going to be the family speech-writer, Lizzie asks which of her relatives is collecting notes about all the stupid things she's going to be doing for the next few years.

(Strip Number 1189, Original Publication Date, 12 August 1987)

Panel 1: At the reception, the master of ceremonies thanks the attendants before announcing that Georgia's uncle Bert will now toast the bride.

Panel 2: Since Lizzie doesn't understand what that means, she asks John what is going to happen.

Panel 3: He explains that it involves the person telling embarrassing stories about the bride's childhood. She mutters OH in comprehension.

Panel 4: She then mildly astonishes John by asking which family member is tasked with doing that for HER wedding.

Summary: This puts me in mind of our ancient comments about the self-serving and humiliating speech Liz was told to endure when the Delicate Genius smugly destroyed her public image and was applauded for doing so. Given that the last strip before Elly and Connie let their reach exceed their grasp is Lizzie baffling Marian with a comment about Phil's remarriage, it also makes me wonder if Elly bothered explaining what was happening and why.
