As Elly waxes sentimental about Phil's finally getting married, Jim answers her question about how best to express one's joy by making a show of crying at his son's wedding.

(Strip Number 1187, 8 August 1987)

Panel 1: As the ceremony concludes, the minister tells Phil to place the ring on Georgia's finger.

Panel 2: Now that it's done and Phil is married, Elly finds herself at a rare loss for words.

Panel 3: As she sniffles in happiness, Elly asks herself what word could express the joy and the sentiment one feels at this tender, beautiful moment.

Panel 4: When Jim makes an audible "WHONKK!" after drying his eyes (because they're filled with liquid pride*), John, Elly and Marian are gobsmacked.

Summary: This is because while it might express the joy and sentiment, it's also rather rude and disgusting.

* Reference to My Little Pony because my niece Carrie is into that.
