While Marian gets sentimental about how her little boy has grown up Jim delights in the fact that Phil's marriage means that he and his wife are finally free of having to be a life-line for their adult children.

(Strip Number 1185, Original Publication Date, 3 August 1987)

Panel 1: While we're waiting for things to start, we find ourselves watching Michael seating Grandma Marian and Grandpa Jim in the pew beside Elly.

Panel 2: Given that Phil is (finally) getting married, Marian knows she'll cry despite wanting to keep her stiff upper lip.

Panel 3: She does point out that even though she's sad, she joins most parents wanting her children to grow up and become independent.

Panel 4: Jim thought-bubbles that he is glad the kids are on their feet because now he and Marian can blow their inheritance and travel.

Summary: Five bucks says that Lynn applauds her dad for making assholish comments about getting kids off the payroll like this.
