John tells us how Things Shall Be when he makes a comment that more or less dismisses Molly and Gayle's feelings of loss and betrayal by hiding being the fiction of the resilient child.

(Strip 4830, Original Publication Date, 4 July 1987)

Panel 1: Having set up the kiddy pool for Lizzie, John asks Elly if Molly and Gayle have found their way into the neighbourhood yet.

Panel 2: She says they have but also that everyone has noticed how gloomy the two of them are.

Panel 3: She can understand why abruptly leaving home has done a number on them but asks John when they're going to chill already.

Panel 4: He thinks that as soon as no one takes notice of their theatrical display of mourning, they'll settle down a mite.

Summary: This must be why he made a point of not noticing the fact that April felt like the world was being pulled out from under her. He's programmed to think that children under the age of majority have no real problems and can't deal with reality. Also, making him Mr Exposition like this makes him look like he spends all of his time in his damned workshop.
