Elly lays a "loser really needs to win" speech on Lizzie and confuses her by telling her that maybe Melody is intimidated by her.

(Strip Number 4766, Original Publication Date, 19 February 1987)

Panel 1: Now that Lizzie has asked Elly about this Melody person, Elly says that sometimes a person seems stuck-up but they're only shy.

Panel 2: Maybe her classmate is just afraid to be friends with her.

Panel 3: Elizabeth checks her face in the mirror.

Panel 4: She then asks how anyone could be afraid of a face like hers.

Summary: Lizzie is young and naive and literal-minded and hasn't yet figured out that it's the personality behind the face that matters most. Also, Elly is pretty bad at explaining things to kids.
