Phil is astonished when Elly actually stands up for herself instead of allowing herself to cajoled into doing something she doesn't want to like she usually does.

(Strip Number 1109, Original Publication Date, 21 January 1987)

Panel 1: Elly accepts Phil's right to smoke if he wants to. He thanks her.

Panel 2: When she tells him that she wants him to go outside, he's taken aback.

Panel 3: Phil tries to diminish the impact of one cigarette by the use of a cute name but Elly ain't having it.

Panel 4: When she screams at him to take it outside and in the cold, Phil is startled.

Summary: I wonder how loudly Lynn will crow about the changing values that force the Phils of the world out of doors. I also wonder if Alan resents being depicted as a pathetic junkie.
