In this year's reminder that Lynn doesn't understand the horrible power nicotine has over people, we learn that Elly can't understand that Phil uses cigarette smoking as a means of self-medicating away his (mostly self-induced) anxiety.

(Strip Number 1108, Original Publication Date, 20 January 1987)

Panel 1: As she puts the coffee cups away, Elly catches Phil lighting up a cigarette and pulling the 'what's all this now then' stuff British police used to be known for.

Panel 2: When she reminds him that he was supposed to have quit, Phil says that he's self-medicating away the pressure he's put himself under making too much of his wedding.

Panel 3: Elly points out that he's been free for a year before asking how he can fill his lungs with garbage.

Panel 4: Said garbage is said to make him feel better.

Summary: Dr Jones's prescription for Phil's woes is "lose the toxic bitch older sister yearning to see you miserable no matter how much she denies it and you won't need the cancer sticks." This is because I know that Phil would have an easier time of it if Elly were far away from him. After all, everybody would be far better off if Elly were to be removed from the equation.
