Elly's reluctance to make a fool of herself merely because doing so might benefit her child evaporates when the older impulse of wanting to win at all costs reasserts itself.

(Strip Number 4732, Original Publication Date, 18 December 1986)

Panel 1: Now that she's actually at Philpotts, Elly thought-bubbles about how ridiculous it is that she and all the other people are for being in line to get a mere toy.

Panel 2: After all, if they should run out of Space Babes, it's not as if she's going to degrade herself for some dumb doll Lizzie can do without.

Panel 3: Suddenly, the clerk shows up and asks which parent came first.

Panel 4: Equally suddenly, Elly is the most violent and desperate person yelling "Me, ME!!!!" and trampling the man to get The Toy.

Summary: This is where Elly's killer instinct wins out over her need to pose as something she isn't: a figure of dignity and class.
