We get the first real hint that the trip will end up being a harrowing fight to survive when John wonders who, if anyone, knows where he and Phil are.

(Strip Number 4656, Original Publication Date, 22 July 1986)

Panel 1: As they paddle along, Phil tells that he's found the bay he remembers near a small portage.

Panel 2: He then says that with his memory and his map, they'll know exactly where they are.

Panel 3: John asks if anyone else knows exactly where they are.

Summary: Given that it took a day for them to be missed and two days more to find them, I'd say that it's possible that the answer is pretty much "No. No one knows where the two city boys are headed because they never told anyone." If you've been paying attention, you'll have figured out that this did not apply to Rod because everyone who isn't Lynn knew where he was headed and how long it would take him to get there and get back.
