Panel 1: We find John and Phil driving towards their destiny. As they do so, Phil sings the praises of the place by marveling at the memory of a paradise with thousands of tiny bays and islands.
Panel 2: Yessir, one can really commune with nature under the stars in the pure wilderness they're heading towards.
Panel 3: John's comment about having to commute on a busy highway before they commune hints at the moral people thought they were getting.
Summary: At the time, I thought I was reading a plain vanilla comment about paving paradise and putting up a parking lot. I'd had no idea that what started out as "John and Phil comment on how development wrecks everything" would turn into a harrowing struggle for survival.
