Elly is so busy hectoring the children about the need to keep track of what they pack for the beach trip they take that she forgets to pack her own stuff. This is somehow their fault.

(Strip Number 7220, Original Publication Date, 6 July 1986)

Panel 1: We start things off with Mike and Lizzie all happy and stuff because they're going to the beach today.

Panel 2: Elly shuts that down by bellowing about how they need to stop horsing around and get ready.

Panel 3: As Elly packs the lunch they're going to have, she goes into full-on lecturing killjoy mode when she reminds them where they're going (Rainbow Lake) and how they've got to be responsible for their own things.

Panel 4: She escalates immediately to RAGE FACE when she tells them to decide what they need and get it and to not wait for HER to organize their stuff for them.

Panel 5: As she hauls the stuff to the car, she says she does not want to be pestered about things they've forgotten.

Panel 6: As they drive off, she says that she hopes they brought everything because they aren't going back.

Panel 7: Now that they're at the lake, Lizzie asks Elly if she's coming in with them; as she unpacks lunch, Elly says that she isn't.

Panel 8: As Elly roots through a duffle bag, Lizzie asks her why she isn't coming swimming.

Panel 9: Goggle-Eyed, Horror-Struck Elly whines that she forgot her swimsuit at home. Given that she's actually wearing her swimsuit, I think that someone's having a brain fart.

Summary: Remember how I once said the cover of Pushing Forty was "John Defined" because it had him grinning like a big, stupid asshole kid because his family took it in the shorts so he could make a repulsive spectacle of himself. Today's strip is "Elly Defined"; that's because we see an inflexible, stupid and easily angered woman too hung up on details to enjoy life who spends so much time lecturing people that she forgets what's important. Also, it's her children's fault that she's a rigid, raging, panicky nitwit despite having been born that way and, when the trip is ruined when Lizzie says that she just wore boardshorts over her swimsuit and took them off in the car, will continue to be Lizzie's fault.
