We get hit over the head with the annoying moral to this week's arc when Evil Mike tells Brian that he doesn't want Elly to ever win when she does things for his own good.

(Strip Number 10996, Original Publication Date, 16 May 1986)

Panel 1: A little while later, Brian comes along and asks Mike what's going on. Mike explains that his mom kicked him out of the house because she's working.

Panel 2: When Brian offers playing basketball, riding bikes and going to the park as alternatives to sitting on the curb looking miserable, Mike shoots him down each time.

Panel 3: Brian asks him why he just wants to sit there and look pathetic.

Panel 4: Mike confuses him by saying that he'd rather be upset than give the mother who says "I'm getting a job to PUNISH YOU for daring to make demands on MY time" the satisfaction of seeing him enjoy himself.

Summary: This allows Lynn to tick off the boxes "castigate my mother for making me go out and play when there was stuff on TV" and "castigate my children for wanting to be in the same building I'm in because my tiny brain can't handle interruption" on her List Of Annoying Things To Complain About. Also, he'd gladly have gone to the park with Lawrence because they have mothers who boss them around like they don't count in common.
