We begin the town hall saga with Mike telling her that a check she thought was simply an advertising gimmick actually isn't.

(Strip Number 1043, Original Publication Date, 28 April 1986)

Panel 1: As Elly does the dishes, Mike tells her that he was going to toss all the junk mail when he came across a cheque for fifty dollars.

Panel 2: Elly tells him that she saw it and assumes that it's merely an advertising gimmick.

Panel 3: When Mike reads the cover letter which states "Dear Mrs Patterson: the poem you submitted has been accepted for publication. Enclosed is our check for...," her eyes go out on stalks.

Panel 4: She yells "LEMME SEE THAT!!" as she grabs the letter out of his hands (and possibly makes him soil himself in terror).

Summary: Hmmm. I wonder what other important messages have been lost letting a dumb kid who doesn't know better handle a grown woman's job because laundry needs to be done inefficiently and back porches need to be swept obsessively.
