Elly suffers cruelly because despite wanting reassurance that she's done nothing wrong, the evil, scary voice bad people who hate her call "her conscience" tells her that she's acted like a punk.

(Strip Number 4585, Original Publication Date, 20 March 1986)

Panel 1: We find Elly in bed asking herself why she made that horrible comment to Ted and Irene; she answers herself by calling herself an insensitive clod.

Panel 2: She then tells herself that she's a dimwit who never learns from experience when she asks herself why she never thinks before she speaks.

Panel 3: She tells herself that this is the problem with agonizing over things after midnight.

Panel 4: The only one who answers her questions is herself.

Summary: This is why she's so hungry for Connie to return, I should think. Connie has all the right answers...if, by 'right', we mean "telling Elly to go forth and be stupid."
