As John explains to the kids that Elly said there was not enough room in the car for the kids what with her, Jim, Marian and the baggage, his breezy talk about how unsentimental she is is proven to be a lie.

(Strip Number 1017, Original Publication Date, 6 February 1986)

Panel 1: We find ourselves watching Mike asking John why he and Lizzie weren't allowed to see Grandma Marian and Grandpa Jim off at the airport.

Panel 2: He repeats Elly's comment about how there simply wasn't enough room in the car.

Panel 3: He then says that they don't like long, tearful goodbyes anyway.

Panel 4: As he says this, we find that Elly and her parents are crying at the airport gate when the PA system announces that their flight is about to leave.

Summary: As we say goodbye to the olds for a year and a half, we do so in the knowledge that it'll take that long for Elly to deprogram the kids. We also do so in the knowledge that Jim was not sufficiently penitent to do something crazy like help pay the plasterer.
