In today's strip, Elly laments the fact that her parents are growing old.

(Strip Number 987, Original Publication Date, 9 December 1985)

Panel 1: We find John and Elly on the couch; she tells him that she's looking forward to her parents visiting because she hasn't seen either of them in a year.

Panel 2: She then tells him that it scares her how much older they look every time she sees them.

Panel 3: She does allow as how she doesn't mind getting older herself.

Panel 4: She just she wants her parents to stop aging while she does it.

Summary: This theme seems to echo through the years. Eighteen years from now, Liz says the same thing about John and Elly that Elly does about her own parents. Eventually, Meredith will talk about how horrifying it is that Mike and Deanna are looking old. The unifying theme seems to be "if our parents age and die, are WE safe?"
