In today's strip, John's inability to remember who he's married to keeps him from realizing why Elly spent a sleepless night.

(Strip Number 6689, Original Publication Date, 8 December 1985)

Panel 1: As our story continues, we find Elly alone in bed staring at an alarm clock that tells her that it's 11:47 at night.

Panel 2: Since she can't sleep without John around because she's gotten used to his snoring bulk, she tosses and turns.

Panel 3: She looks at the clock again and finds out that it's 12:02.

Panel 4: She tosses and turns some more.

Panel 5: She looks out the bedroom window hoping that she sees John coming home.

Panel 6: When she looks at the clock again, she sees that it's 12:45.

Panel 7: Elly overhears John entering the house quietly.

Panel 8: Having founds Elly awake, John apologizes for his being late and explains why: his meeting ran long and he had to drive some guy named Joe home because his car broke down.

Panel 9: Anguished-looking Elly is anguished when she asks why he didn't call.

Panel 10: Since he didn't read today's strip, he doesn't know how ironic it is that he didn't want to wake her up.

Summary: The odd thing is not that he can't sleep when she's not there either. The odd thing is that neither person ever found that out about each other. Ah, well. Neither person wants to blab because neither one wants to look weak.
