We return to the idiotic soap opera arc with social maladroit and all-around cluess jerk Mike being too oblivious and self-absorbed to understand that when he says 'just a sec,' it doesn't mean that can monopolize the phone.

(Strip Number 956, Original Publication Date, 7 October 1985)

Panel 1: We find ourselves watching Mike realizing that Mom is talking to Lawrence's mom and then pleading to be able to talk to Lawrence.

Panel 2: His whining about how Lawrence is his best friend and that he hasn't talked to him in ages irritates her.

Panel 3: She gets especially rage-faced when he says he's only going to talk for a minute or so.

Panel 4: She relents, hands him the phone and gets stunned when he assumes that she's finished talking to Connie.

Summary: Mike is not big on this "empathy" thing people keep telling him about, is he? He might realize that Lawrence is his friend and that he longs for him but the idea that Connie is Elly's friend and that she longs to hear her voice is one that zooms miles over his empty head.
