Panel 1: We find Elly making that stupid palms-out pleading gesture as she whines to John about how she can't understand why Mike makes a production number out of his homework.
Panel 2: She then bleats about how if he'd apply himself and not listen to headache music, he'd get the lot done in an hour.
Panel 3: Instead, he wastes half the evening whining and complaining about how he can't concentrate before he even starts doing it her (or, as we say in English, 'the wrong') way.
Panel 4: Michael overhears and thinks that he needs the time to warm up.
Summary: This is a distant foreshadowing of the last time homework is featured in the strip. As it shall be then, Elly cannot see that SHE is the error in the system. Mike was doing all right until she started blathering about how he couldn't concentrate.
