Phil grumbles about giving up a great job as an electrician because he doesn't realize that Elly's "encouraging" Mike to practice consists of calling him a worthless failure who wants to destroy himself to spite her.

(Strip Number 893, Original Publication Date, 17 July 1985)

Panel 1: As our story continues, Phil tries to give a very reluctant Michael his last trumpet lesson of the season.

Panel 2: To his displeasure, he finds that Michael hasn't practiced the piece or his scales.

Panel 3: He then asks about the tongue exercises.

Panel 4: When Michael blows a raspberry, Phil laments giving up a career as an electrician for teaching.

Summary: Phil tends to not remember that while Mike might look like him, he takes after his whining defeatist sister Elly. Then again, what teacher in the strip has ever blamed a parent for a child's failings?
