We begin the "Mike gets steamrolled into spending all his money on Elly for Mother's Day" arc with his being berated for invading Elly's sanctum sanctorum.

(Strip Number 843, Original Publication Date, 29 April 1985)

Panel 1: We find ourselves at the library today watching Elly doing whatever it is she does. When No-Inside Voice Mike makes the scene and yells if he can have his allowance, she's less astonished that he's too dumb to read the signs imploring him to respect other library patrons than she is by the fact that he's there at all.

Panel 2: This is because (as Steph Van Doolewoord says) Elly has told him many times to NEVER go to where she works. (This is because he's SO naughty, the words will just vanish from the books and she'll be fired and NEVER have an identity of her own and whatever nonsense she spouts to justify fleeing from her child in disgusted, baffled rage.)

Panel 3: She then sets up a stupid punchline by asking if what she says goes in one ear and out the other.

Panel 4: Mike irritates her by covering one ear to keep her nagging from leaking out and asking her to repeat herself.

Summary: While I ain't fond of some jerk kid who just barges in and starts hollering like he doesn't know how to behave in public, I'm equally cheesed off at the idiot mother who never seems to have time to teach him. Elly had every opportunity to show him how to act like a civilized person but she was too busy yelling GO AWAY!!! to do so. The end result is the mess we see here.
