Michael reassures Lizzie that Elly will return because she left them behind.

(Strip Number 4488, Original Publication Date, 3 April 1985)

Panel 1: As she and Mike get ready for bed, Lizzie asks him what if Mommy never comes back ever.

Panel 2: Michael reassures her that Elly simply has to come back home.

Panel 3: After all, she left her most valuable stuff behind.

Panel 4: Said valuable stuff is them.

Summary: This is the first appearance of a theme that would re-appear when April started to cling to ankles when John and Elly went on their kid-unfriendly vacations: the fear that Mommy and Daddy (bust mostly Mommy) want to leave and never come home. Elly never understood this shrinking fear that something they'd said or done would make her so mad that she'd just bail on them and saw it as a need to shackle her to a stove because they hate her and never want her to have an identity of their own.
