(Strip Number 824, 27 March 1985)
Panel 1: As our story continues, we find Claire and Elly at the Restaurant Of Being Treated Shabbily. As they wait to get poor service from the Man-Stealing Hussy Waitress, Claire tells Elly about her work with what used to be called differently abled kids before that evolved into a slur word and how she thought the puppetry workshop would help her teach the younger ones to read.
Panel 2: Elly thinks it must be hard teaching kids that are... well... (Insert favourite ableist "euphemism" here.)
Panel 3: Before Elly can foreshadow The Continental and refer to the "winkies" as having ALL the disabilities because that's just how things work, Claire interrupts her and says "Are you kidding?! They're all smarter than I am!!"
Summary: This is another Aesop that the Pattersons would need to learn and learn and learn. Given how Jim's stroke meant that he HAD to have the mind of an infant Because That's Just How Things Are, APRIL!!!!!, it's another moral that just never stuck. Also, I don't want to be that guy but it seems to me that just maybe, the waitress is punishing Elly for assuming something she shouldn't.
