First of all, I'm always, always, ALWAYS wary of remakes and updates of beloved children's characters. For every "Flintstones" movie, which (despite howls about Rosie O'Donnell being "too fat" to play Betty Rubble) at least looked and felt like "The Flintstones", you get an "Inspector Gadget" made by incompetent idiots.
"This is based on a cartoon right?"
"Yup, ever watched it?"
"Wanna watch it?"
"Fuck no! Let's just throw in a bunch of cartoony sound effects! That'll be close enough!"
After all, it's not their childhoods they're pissing on and...and...
Oh good Lord...Why? Why are they gangster? Don't flash me that peace sign, Theodore! You put your little deformed hand away! And Alvin's hat!? Where's his hat dammit?! Hoodies aren't hats! They're hoodies!
Suffice to say, when I went on Youtube today and this trailer suddenly popped up, I wasn't too thrilled...
But I clicked on it anyway to see what the damage was...
and was actually surprised.
It's still too early to definitively tell, and it may come back to bite me in the ass for saying this, but it actually looks like it has...promise. Even in 3D the animation style is true to the original, the classic theme is there, and there's not a fart noise or soon-to-be-dated pop culture joke to be heard. Schultz's son Craig and grandson Bryan are being credited as producers.
So here's hoping.
