Lynn Johnston first mentioned Katie was pregnant during her GoComics live Q&A back on September 19, 2013. At the time Lynn said she could not attend the New York Comic-Con because she was expecting a grandchild. Given the that New York Comic-Con was in October, I was:
a. Surprised Lynn about the New York Comic-Con dates and that she knew Katie's due date would interfere
b. Convinced Lynn had gotten into the habit of refusing all invitations using Katie as an excuse.
As it turns out, (b) was probably correct. Lynn had done something similar to this sort of announcement back when Katie was pregnant with Laura by mentioning it for the first time during her Schulz Museum talk back on July 11, 2011, which we got to hear via the on-line video.
Lynn's second announcement was the News&Notes from last week which announced Lynn's Treasury #4. Lynn threw in a line about how Katie was going to have to work around the new baby's feeding schedule without mention the baby's name, gender, birth date. This was in stark constrast with Laura's birth, where it was trumpeted across the website and featured pictures of baby Laura held by Katie and Laura shortly after she was born. I speculated the difference in Lynn's reaction was because the new baby was a boy, and it turns out I was right. I actually hoped I would be wrong, but Lynn has made no secret of her anti-male bias in the past.
Naturally the text is more about Laura than about newborn Ryan:
We’re pleased to welcome baby Ryan to the family!
This photo of Laura (now two and a bit) holding her baby brother (four weeks old on March 4th!) is one of the rare times she has allowed us to take her photo. Generally she runs and hides. So far, she is adjusting well to having some competition – but we expect her to have some reservations about her big sister status. I’ll keep you posted!
Four weeks old on March 4 means Ryan has a February 4, 2014 birth date. It looks like he was born with a full head of hair and picked up Katie and Laura's hair color. He looks like a cutie-pie and I hope Lynn writes a little more about him. Grandsons are fun too, Lynn!!
