Elly goes on a spending spree because she thinks that getting free tickets means that everything else is free as well.

(Strip Number 814, Original Publication Date, 7 March 1985)

Panel 1: We start things off with John's eyes bulging out of their sockets; this is because Elly has bought a new suitcase for her trip.

Panel 2: She's also bought a whole new wardrobe just for the occasion.

Panel 3: Since John's brain hasn't caught up with the fact that they can easily afford all of this, Elly tells him to stop staring at her like she's trying to put them in the poorhouse.

Panel 4: After all, this is a free trip so it isn't costing them a cent. Since John remembers that only the tickets and accomodation are free, he doesn't quite see it that way.

Summary: What bothers me most about John's frugality is that it always seems to kick in when Elly wants something nice for herself. It's as if Lynn is sending Rod a message about all of the silly things he wasted money on when she had needs of her own. Needs like not living in a town full of adultery-loving jerks who hated her and loved the flying dentist and so on and so forth.
