John's telling Elly that he was just joshing leads to a reminder that Elly primarily married John for his money.

Panel 2: Having opened the door, he gets all insecure about her deciding to upgrade to a better man.
Panel 3: She says that she's not interested either.
Panel 4: This is because a nerd in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Summary: It's this sort of settling for less because they know that anything better is out of their reach that Lynn preaches as being an ideal. That's kind of sad, ain't it?
