In today's strip, Mike stupidly thinks that he can work around Elly and have his party despite her angry refusal to allow it. What he doesn't realize is that the more he pushes on a non-issue like this, the firmer she digs in. When it actually matters, she folds like an idiot.

(Strip Number 731, Original Publication Date, 23 October 1984)

Panel 1: Elly adopts the "Your question is so wrong and hateful, I can't bear to look at you, you horrible, selfish child" posture of being a judgemental idiot and pious, pig-headed fraud as she tells Mike that no, she doesn't want to have a Halloween party at the house.

Panel 2: We spend a panel of watching Elly getting more and more pissed off at her child for failing to realize that asking her to do something she doesn't want to do is something he should feel ashamed of doing.

Panel 3: She then makes an ugly fool of herself as she yells "absolutely no!"

Panel 4: In an effort to save face (and with the hope that he can get John to piss off the provider of his greaseburgers), Michael reports to Lawrence, Gordon, Darryl and Janice that Elly said maybe.

Summary: Good luck convincing her, dummy!! The more you push, the more she'll dig in and the more she'll hate you for making her want to leave her narrow comfort zone.

Note: Given that Lynn seems to suffer from a debilitating case of social anxiety disorder, it's less likely that this was taken from real life and more likely that it's her way of reminding her children that Mommy despises large groups of people.
