(Strip Number 727, Original Publication Date, 17 October 1984)
Panel 1: Elly is still wailing piteously about how Lizzie wants to stab her poooooooooooooooooor mother in the HEART!!!!! by dressing as a punk rocker for Halloween.
Panel 2: John tries to inject his evil male common sense into the discussion by pointing out that dressing as a punk rocker for Halloween means nothing at all.
Panel 3: He then tempts fate by inviting her to watch him not be disturbed by a trend that is supposed to mortify him.
Panel 4: Elly disturbs him into compliance with her plan to brow-beat her children into doing what Mommy wants by scaring him with the equally irrelevant spectre of Mike being dressed as Boy George.
Summary: This is because Elly needs to suppress her children's personal preferences because she believes in a limiting and stupid falsehood. Rather than not sweating the small stuff, Elly has to make a big deal about nothing at all because she thinks that she's the only person on Earth keeping things from collapsing into chaos and anarchy. If that means that the children have no fun, that's the price THEY have to pay.
