(Strip Number 721, Original Publication Date, 6 October 1984)
Panel 1: While doing the dishes, Elly asks Georgia how she put up with Phil when he was quitting smoking.
Panel 2: Even though he acted like an ogre, she'd promised herself never to marry a man who smokes.
Panel 3: Phil overhears Georgia and Elly use the dreaded word "married" and contemplates a future in which any sort of compromise means that he'd be the one giving things up for a change.
Panel 4: The idea of living in the miserable world of rules, schedules and consequences that regular, boring people like Elly inhabit alarms him so much, he screams for a cigarette.
Summary: Christ!! What a jerk!!! I blame Marian for bringing him up to believe that he shouldn't bother with rules or the rights and feelings of other people. Jim might want to have imposed structure on the boy but Mommy Dearest clearly seems to have gotten her way with this one too.
