Saturday, 21 September 2013: Die Already, John Patterson.....

We end the week with John blinding himself to the fact that Elly needs her part time job to feel as if she's actually making a difference in the world. Admitting that would be too much like admitting that he has NEVER known what he's talking about and that would be just terrible.

(Strip Number 712, Original Publication Date, 22 September 1984)

Panel 1: Once again, Elly tries explaining to her idiot husband that the only thing that's wrong with her it that she is finding it very difficult being a working mother.

Panel 2: She feels as if she's gotta be in two places at once because she has two jobs and she works like crazy at them both.

Panel 3: Brain-dead John assumes that her having a life outside the home is the problem and suggests if she's so stressed out, she should just plain quit the job.

Panel 4: Having successfully identified her rat-bastard husband as the oaf he is, Elly baffles John when she angrily asks him which one should she consider quitting.

Summary: As I said, it took years for John to realize that he was being a heel. Since he feels that displaying remorse is a sign of the weakness he fears and hates more than anything else, he responded by forting himself up in a garage to avoid seeing the damage he did.
