When told to pick up the candy wrappers he and his friends left on the back lawn, Mike oppresses Elly by pointing out that she bought the candy in the first place.

(Strip Number 7166, Original Publication Date, 2 September 1984)

Panel 1:: We start things off with Elly standing on the back porch yelling for Mike to come outside NOW!!!!!

Panel 2: The reason is that he and his chums have made the mess of her back lawn she's yelling at him about.

Panel 3: She thus wants him to clean up all the candy wrappers NOW!!!!; he hatefully starts to reject his duty.

Panel 4: She tells him to can the chatter and get picking stuff up.

Panel 5: He goes on to spout the hateful, anti-mother LIE that it's somehow unfair that he do so alone since he wasn't the only one eating candy.

Panel 6: She sends the you-message that since he and his friends made the mess, he alone is responsible.

Panel 7:: He then defies everything good by stating that she too is responsible for this.

Panel 8: The idea that she might share part of the blame causes her to yell "WHAT?!"

Panel 9: Being told that she bought the candy in the first place is so confusing and wrong and not to the point that she's horrified into silence.

Summary: The Lynnsight is all about how little Lynn cares for "I" messages because of how readily children turn things around on parents. The example in this instance would be that "I know that you hate me and worship CHAOS and want to destroy my freedom of expression" and the child's attempt at mutiny is "I don't hate you, I just don't want to yelled at for things I don't do!"

That being said, I have an I-message of my own: "I think that Elly should have put a garbage bin on the porch and told the kids that the wrappers go in there, not on her lawn."
