Elly refuses to yield on the whole "toss things aside without asking" thing; given that the notes are all about how she feels bad because her mother did that to her, I think we're looking at a case of sin-thine-ass-off.

(Strip Number 686, Original Publication Date, 22 August 1984)

Panel 1:: We join Mike trying to destroy Elly's ability to express herself in mid martyrdom as Elly explains that the things she saved him from were broken, rusty and old.

Panel 2: Michael attempts to usher in an era of chaos wherein adults cannot say or do anything by stating that that was his stuff she threw away and that she should have asked him first.

Panel 3:: She bravely tries to deny this by stating that she thinks that he should have taken better care of his stuff if he wanted it to stay.

Panel 4: He then selfishly oppresses Elly by saying "I did look after them! I KEPT them, didn't I?"

Summary: The sad thing is that as I type this, he's the one lecturing children about HIS absolute and unquestionable right to decide what belongings they're allowed to keep. This is because what he learned is belongings only belong to people strong enough to keep them; if they can't defend their rights, they must be punished for being weak.
