We start the "Chopped Liver Is You, Elly" arc with John telling Elly that while women like Susan 'impress' him, he's far too insecure to actually speak to one.

(Strip Number 584, Original Publication Date, 2 April 1984)

Panel 1: We fast-forward a few minutes ahead to find John and Elly in the kitchen. As he drinks his coffee, he tells her that Susan is absolutely beatiful.

Panel 2: Elly is mildly perturbed by John's gushing over the fact that Sue's got perfect hair, a perfect face and perfect teeth.

Panel 3: She acts on this frustration by pointing out that if the two of them were single, he'd probably then date her.

Panel 4: John is amazed that Elly would say that; after all, women like Susan scare him to death.

Summary: In the real world, this was probably inspired by a compliment that Lynn insisted on taking the wrong way. My guess is that the notes will confirm this hunch of mine.
