Panel 1: As Susan explains that Elly's job is supervised by the children's programme coordinator at the main branch of the library, smiling jackhole John is too busy wondering what she does or doesn't have on underneath to really listen.
Panel 2: The leering ape only half-hears that the work comes to her, she assigns it to Monique who hired Elly to work part-time.
Panel 3: Since John only half-understood what Susan said because he was too busy 'paying her the compliment' of imagining her naked, he breezily sums Elly up as the assistant to the assistant's assistant. This displeases Elly because she can hear the filthy dick say it as if she's furniture or something.
Summary: If this makes her feel lousy about herself, wait until John admits to marrying her because she's homely enough to make him feel superior to someone.
