We end the Humphrey the hamster arc with Elly telling Michael that since the little fellow managed to survive an encounter with the Patterson family, he can be said to have had a good time.

(Strip Number 580, Original Publication Date, 24 March 1984)

Panel 1: As our story continues, we find Elly driving Michael and Humphrey the hamster to school; Mike says that he wishes he didn't hafta do this.

Panel 2: Elly reminds him that Humphrey belongs to the class which means it's some other family's time to have him.

Panel 3: Mike asks Elly "He had a good time at our house, didn't he?"; Elly says that this must be the case.

Panel 4: After all, he survived the week.

Summary: This, I should think, is one in the loss column for Elly; I forget who said that she came into this hoping that Humphrey would die but he or she is spot on. This is a great big disappointment for our hero because now, she cannot lecture Mike with her back turned to him and her eyes closed about how he killed the class pet and thus must do what she says. We won't see class pets again because the damned things survive and thus make Elly's life worse.
