Today's strip makes me wonder if the title of the next treasury is more accurate than we might otherwise believe. That's because when Elly talks about how her first paycheque will cover the cost of all the stuff she bought, John reminds her of all the other stuff she paid for because she thought that her first paycheque would cover it.

(Strip Number 566, Original Publication Date, 6 March 1984)

Panel 1: Having noticed that Elly has just brought in a bunch of boxes from the car, John asks her what all of that stuff is. Elly tells him that she's bought new clothes for him and the kids

Panel 2: She smiles as she tells him to not worry because she gets paid next week and that ought to cover everything.

Panel 3: He reminds her that they had the car fixed and bought a new lamp because of said cheque.

Panel 4: Elly thought-bubbles that every time they expect new money, they spend it twice before it gets there.

Summary: This sort of thinking is pretty much why they always seem to be just barely getting by, why they're always just barely making ends meet. It's also why Mike and Dee are so poor....the Delicate Genius has internalized the sort of chaotic financial non-planning that makes Doc Ock think he's a better Spider-Man than Peter "I don't even have life insurance" Parker.
