In today's strip, Ted tells John to be his own man and make his own decisions. As it was yesterday, Lynn thinks that she's subverting this message by having him ask the server what she recommends for lunch.

(Strip Number 4401, Original Publication Date, 13 January 1984)

Panel 1: We continue our conversation with Ted telling John that his problem is that he lets other people influence him too much.

Panel 2: He then tells John to be his own boss and make his own decisions.

Panel 3: Just then, a server in a pink uniform comes to their table and asks if they're ready to order.

Panel 4: Since Ted is an evil, conflict-causing MAN, he calls the woman "Honey" when he says that he hasn't a clue so could she suggest something.

Summary: This, I think, is meant to indicate that Ted treats women like things and is also a hypocrite. What it does indicate that he's an overgrown kid who doesn't realize that he's speaking rubbish fluently.
