In today's strip, Mike says that he'd rather believe that John simply bought a replacement angel than in Christmas magic. There's something off about this and I think it has something to do with John himself.

(Strip Number 525, Original Publication Date, 22 December 1983)

Panel 1: We start things off with an elated Mike marveling that the Christmas angel isn't broken any more.

Panel 2: He then asks John if he drove up to the store and simply bought a new one while he was in bed.

Panel 3: John asks if Mike is too old to believe in Christmas magic. Mike says that he isn't.

Panel 4: He would, on the other hand, rather believe in John.

Summary: The message of this mess is probably supposed to be that even if your parents are angry with you, you can still count on them. The problem is that we've never really been given much of a sign that John can be trusted to do right by his children.
