Panel 1: Elly tells John that June has been her friend for quite some time; this will make it somewhat difficult to look her in the face now that "Fred" is with another woman.
Panel 2: John tells Elly to give the man the benefit of the doubt; he and this woman could be casual friends.
Panel 3: As John and Elly look at Not-really-Fred and his dinner guest, something that they do alarms the Pattersons.
Panel 4: A slightly flustered John tells Elly that maybe "Fred" nibbles everyone like that.
Summary: At least this solves the mystery of why John doesn't ask her if that is Fred. Fred, it would seem, is not one of John's friends. What he is could be best described as a friend-in-law; if Elly didn't know June, John would probably never have met Fred.
