Panel 1: We fast-forward to Mike's having returned home; having noticed that he didn't have those injuries this morning, Elly asks him to let her to take a look at him and see if that is, in fact, a black eye he's sporting.
Panel 2: As he wipes his nose on the back of his hand, she asks him if he's been fighting.
Panel 3: As she cleans him up, he says that it was Brad and Brad alone doing the fighting.
Panel 4: His face merely happened to be in the way.
