Today's strip is only remarkable because it will be the first in the third pointlessly delayed and poorly structured treasury. The premise that John and Elly are pretty much strangers to one another is not really all that new nor will it be the last time we see the like of it.

(Strip Number 4375, Original Publication Date, 30 September 1983)

Panel 1: It's now time for John and Elly to go to bed; as she puts her hair up in curlers like a good little sitcom wifey, Elly tells John that what they really need is more alone time together.

Panel 2: She goes on to tell him that they live in the same house, eat at the same table but hardly take the time to talk to one another.

Panel 3: As she slathers on her cold cream, she tells him that at the rate they're going, they'll look at one another one day and find that they're complete strangers to each other.

Panel 4: We end with a visual gag that has the two of them astonished by one another's appearance; the obvious conclusion that's being drawn is that it's too damned late.

Summary: This, I should think, is one of the real reasons for all of those kid-free vacations. It's not just taking a holiday from the little strangers and their horrible and cruel demands, it's about the two of them getting to reconnect. God, these two are messed up, ain't they?
