Panel 1: Hm. I wonder if Elly normally makes a full breakfast for April on school days. This often happens ETA: On TV, not IRL when a friend or relative temporarily assumes parenting duties: they go all Donna Reed* for a few days, then they burn out...right about the time that the kid gets used to it! So it comes down to "Can you make banana-walnut pancakes again?" "Oh, jeez, can't I have a day off?"
Anyway, April looks so world-weary when she says "Yeah. Me too." What's the subtext, I wonder? "Yeah, maybe Mom will stop being so uptight." "Yeah, I wish they'd take me with them once in a while." "Yeah, I hope so CAUSE I'M SURE NOT!"
Panel 2: Jeez, she looks terrified at the prospect! But at least she said 'please'.
Panel 3: Yep, she's definitely doing the Supermom thing. I think April knows how to get her backpack on, for cryin' out loud. What's Edgar looking so eager about?
Panel 4: Chirp, chirp, chirp: all she needs is bluebirds flying around her head.
Panel 5: I figured. Well, I can understand, as long as she doesn't get impatient with Connie to her face. Fourteen y/os really want to be autonomous. Also, I wonder if Connie might be thinking along the same lines as my cousin (who was about Connie's age) when I stayed with her once. She said, more than once and in so many words, "I'm doing such-and-such because your mom doesn't do it for you!" As if my mom was being neglectful because OMG, she made me do my own ironing.
*Yes, I know the character was Donna Stone, but it doesn't have the same ring to it.
