In today's strip, we see the first appearance of a bunk-bed in the strip as Elly tries to see a very wary Lizzie on how great it is to have Laura's barely-supported bulk hanging over her head like a flannel-clad sword of Damocles. So much for all the room that the Cruikshanks were supposed to have.

(Strip Number 441, Original Publication Date, 16 July 1983)

Panel 1: Now that we're at the early-to-bed part of the Pattersons' first day at Exile Farm, we find Elly getting Lizzie dressed for bed and telling her that Michael is going to sleep in a cot in her and John's room.

Panel 2: As she carries her down the hallway, she tells Lizzie that she'll be sharing the bunks with Laura.

Panel 3: Elly smiles as she puts Lizzie to bed, Laura smiles at Elly and Lizzie looks somewhat apprehensive.

Panel 4: The reason she does so is because, as she asks Elly, is that she isn't sure that that fing is safe because, well, the barely-supported bulk that is Cousin Laura is inches from her face.

Summary: The interesting thing about this sight gag is that Lynn claims to have invented it. It seems that a few days in, Rod's parents prevailed upon her to let Aaron come with them to Lynn Lake instead of, say, being allowed to wander off on his own and become the same sort of statistic that accompanied the last few minutes of the British public information snuff film Apaches. For those who've never heard of it, it's a cautionary tale of what can happen to children left unsupervised by imbecile farmers. Given that the narrator is the last child to die owing to being a stupid little git left to wander around tractors, jars of weed killer and slurry pits by great stupid twits who should by rights end up getting bum-buggered in prison by a large man named "Shirley", it's also where they got the idea for Sixth Sense.
