In today's strip, Mike's doomed attempts to raise the money for his skates now lead him to be fleeced by someone who grows up to sell used cars. In short, it's the origin story of both a devious bastard and a dimwit who pays bribes to car park attendants.

(Strip Number 422, Original Publication Date, 15 June 1983)

Panel 1: Mike tells Gordon that on top of weeding the lawn, he's also brushed Mrs Baird's dogs and cleaned all of the boots and shoes in his house and still only has twelve dollars to show for his troubles.

Panel 2: Since he sort of understands sales tax now, he wails about how doesn't know what he's going to do because he'll need at least forty more dollars to get his new skates.

Panel 3: Gordon says "Why don't I rent you mine for, say, two dollars an hour?" Mike sets up the punchline by asking how he'll know if it's an hour.

Panel 4: Gordo brandishes a wrist watch and says "I will tell you."

Summary: Since Gordo is a bit of a greedy jerk, his "hour" could be any amount of time he said it was. Also, since he's born to sell used cars to dimwits like John, any aspersions cast on his character will be greeted by huffy moaning about a lack of trust.
