In today's installment of "How not to teach your children about money" theatre, Elly is gobsmacked when she is once again reminded that Mike thinks that seven year olds shouldn't race around like idiots for money.

(Strip Number 421, Original Publication Date, 14 June 1983)

Panel 1: We find Mike weeding the back lawn and mentioning that he hates it. Not only is this a bit beyond his capacities, he's only going to get three dollars for his troubles.

Panel 2: He screams to the sky that he needs fifty dollars for a new pair of roller skates so to do so in time to avoid being sneered at, he'll have to work like crazy. This attracts Elly's attention.

Panel 3: Elly tells him that that's the way it is. She then tells him that John has to work hard for the money he makes.

Panel 4: Since she's sort of stupid, she's astonished when he says that's different because that's what grown-ups are supposed to do.

Summary: If the whole point of this was to teach him how to be responsible with money, I'd say that it was doomed from the get-go. The better way would be to pay the boy a regular allowance and teach him how to save towards something he wants. Where this falls down is that the same vermin who wanted John to punch April's teeth down her throat because "she knows when dinner time is, by rib!" assume that they do that too. In both cases, they assume competence (and defiance) where none are shown to exist.
