Panel 1: An enthused John tells Mike that they've got enough things that they can build a go-kart.
Panel 2: They've got lumber, bolts, wheels and washers and asks him what he thinks.
Panel 3: Mike thinks that it's neat.
Panel 4: He then astonishes John by not picking up on Daddy's use of the pronoun 'we' and asking him to get him when it's been put together.
Summary: John's astonishment is not because he just realized that Mike is a dullard; it's coming from the same part of his mind that got pissed when Mike alluded to the evil, unfair comment "You breed'em, you feed'em" and causes him to think that his 'ungrateful', 'lazy' son is 'exploiting' him. Simply put, the man needs to see the people around him as trying to get him because on some level that he doesn't want to be aware of, he knows that he needs to be got. Besides, Mike has to watch Lizzie anyway.
