In today's strip, we are being asked to feel sorry for Elly because someone calls her on being a shitty parent who's more concerned with her image than Lizzie's happiness.

(Strip Number 4318, Original Publication Date, 31 March 1983)

Panel 1: Now that we find ourselves at the Easter parade, Lizzie balks at participating because of the whole panicking in the face of the unfamiliar small children are known for. Elly's response to the non-event of a small child wanting to not do something that frightens her is to bulge her eyes out in existential terror and whine "What??? You don't want to go to the Easter parade??!!!" as if Lizzie had betrayed her out of the malice that she thinks is the only thing children can feel.

Panel 2: Elly confirms my suspicions that she cares more about her own image than the irrelevance that is the happiness of her children by wailing piteously about how long it took to make the bonnet and fix the dress.

Panel 3: Having noticed that the peevish, self-absorbed lunatic that the dentist married is making an ugly fool of herself again, one of the parade's organizers tells Elly not to force an unwilling child to participate. She then tries reminding her that this little shindig is for the kids, not the parents.

Panel 4: Elly's response to being told to think of her children's happiness instead of her own stupid vanity is to scowl and angrily thought-bubble that there's one of THOSE in every crowd.

Summary: The same thing could well be said about Elly herself. That's because no matter where you go, you'll find a vain halfwit like her that yowls witlessly about herself and her needs and her sacrifices as a means of reminding her children that she is far more important than they can ever be. To be asked to put the interests of a child above her own petty need to show off is thus to be imposed upon by a tyrant offspring instead of being something called a parent.
