It's the beginning of the "John and Elly get all bummed out because they have to fill out their tax returns" arc. Since the Pattersons are poor at keeping records, he isn't taking it well.

(Strip Number 4311, Original Publication Date, 14 March 1983)

Panel 1: We start things off with Elly removing a drawer-full of receipts, forms and bills from a filing-cabinet.

Panel 2: She takes it to the kitchen table. As she does so, John looks at her in something that can be best described as pants-wetting terror.

Panel 3: Since he regards doing his taxes in much the same light as Elly does having icky, scary sex, he tells her "Not tonight, dear. I have a headache."

Summary: It's not just the prospect of paying taxes in the first place that annoy, confuse and horrify John. It's the presence of a wife who needs to take her shoes off to count past ten and small children who mess things up.
